Resize an image

One still JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 20 MiB, 12 megapixels and 6,000 pixels per side. Processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Presets are common canvas shapes, not a guarantee of platform acceptance. Proportional resizing rounds to whole pixels; enlarging cannot recover missing detail. JPEG flattens transparency onto white. Animated formats are rejected. Original metadata is not copied into the new export, and the original file stays unchanged.

Width ÷ height = aspect ratio. 1080 ÷ 1350 = 0.8, which is 4:5

How to use this Instagram size guide

  1. Find the placement in the table above, and note its pixel size and ratio.
  2. Add your image to the resizer and pick the matching frame: 4:5 for feed, 1:1 for square or 9:16 for Stories and Reels.
  3. Choose whether to fit or crop, then download the resized file and upload it to Instagram.

Worked example

A 1600 × 1600 product photo is square. For a 4:5 feed post, crop it to 1080 × 1350 and keep the product centred, then check that nothing important sits near the left and right edges, because the profile grid trims them.

The best size for an Instagram feed post

1080 × 1350 px at 4:5 takes up the most room in the feed of the commonly supported sizes, which is why it's the usual choice. Instagram also supports 1:1 square at 1080 × 1080 and landscape at 1080 × 566 (1.91:1). Taller 3:4 images at 1080 × 1440 are supported in the app too, though not every paid placement accepts them, so check before you promote one.

How the profile grid crops your posts

Instagram's profile grid now previews posts at 3:4, not as squares. A 4:5 post loses a small strip on each side in the grid, while the full image still shows in the feed. If your grid matters, keep text and faces away from the left and right edges.

Carousels, Stories and Reels

Carousel slides use the same sizes as feed posts, and every slide follows the ratio of the first one, so resize them all to match. Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920 px at 9:16. Instagram's own buttons and captions cover the top and bottom of the screen, so check your layout with our Reels safe-zone tool.

Do Instagram ads use the same sizes?

Mostly, yes. 4:5 is the standard for feed ads and 9:16 for Stories and Reels ads, and many advertisers supply both for each creative. Ads have their own specs for file size and length, so check Meta's Ads Guide before launching.

Common questions

What size should an Instagram post be?

1080 × 1350 px (4:5) is the usual choice for feed posts and carousels. Use 1080 × 1080 px for a square post, and 1080 × 1920 px for Stories and Reels.

What size is an Instagram Story?

1080 × 1920 px, which is a 9:16 ratio. Keep key content away from the top and bottom of the frame.

What aspect ratio does Instagram use?

Feed posts support 4:5, 3:4, 1:1 and 1.91:1. Stories and Reels use 9:16. The profile grid previews posts at 3:4.

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

Instagram crops anything outside its supported ratios, and the profile grid trims posts to a 3:4 preview. Resize the image to a supported ratio before uploading so you choose the crop yourself.
